Together with Drs. Kelemen, Spiegelman, and Park, I am exploring the kinetics and feedbacks of carbon mineralization of mantle peridotite as a potentially inexpensive and practical form of CO2 removal from air and solid storage. Much remains unknown about the mechanical feedbacks and kinetics of the process, so our multidisciplinary team is tackling the issue with a combination of experiments and modeling.

Carbon Mineralization

Using a brand new custom triaxial apparatus, we will conduct flow-through experiments in which CO2 rich fluids will be flushed through samples of peridotite. Extent of reaction will be monitored by a variety of in situ and ex situ methods.
